1.5 "Redstone Update"
« on: 2013 01 04, 19:23:25 »
We should get a thread up for changes that will be necessary server wide.

Only the first snapshot is out and most redstone contraptions will still work, however a lot of changes can be made to improve the designs of some of them. (mostly replacing the old BUD daylight detectors with actual daylight detectors)

Nether quartz is a big change though. It's a new nether ore that is pretty common in newly generated chunks, that is the problem though. Do we crop the nether like the overworld or do we just make people walk out pretty far to new chunks? Another very Blacraft problem, would this ore be an ore to store in collective storages?

There may also be some changes in torch strength (in the snapshot), but I'm not sure if that's because of a bug or something.

It seemed to be about as common as iron (or maybe somewhere between iron and coal in abundance) and it appears in large clusters like coal does. With a fortune 3 pick, I got 26 or so out of a cluster of 8 or 10, which is pretty good.

For the cropping the nether, I'd be all for cropping it. Without a map of the nether, it's hard to know for sure whether a chunk is newly generated unless we go like 500+ blocks from spawntown portal.

As far as the rail system goes, it's going to be a major project to 'industrialize' our rail systems and our mines. The main passenger rail system will be the priority though.

Also, there are these new redstone blocks which can act as an alternative to redstone torches, but mainly it'll double as compact storage. We all know how much redstone public storage has and heck, I've got a large chest full of it myself.

The rail changes are unknown right now so I don't feel like planning for it right now is much of a priority. :P

about the ore: which storage it is left in should be up to the members of the UBSR as it is with all other materials.

about the nether: map before cropping at all

redstone: good.

rail system: if high speed rails are a thing i would find it wasteful to spend it on tens of kilometers of aboveground track when it could have its speed increased 8-fold and use 8 times less material in the nether, so i think we should develop a netherrail in anycase (although for now, netherwalking is fine because 5.6km/s isn't much slower than 8 km/s

Yeah, I know they're unknown, but the passenger rails are likely the first thing we'd want to re-engineer (outside of our own local minecart systems.

The spawntown cargo rail system at the depots though is going to have to be completely uprooted and redesigned.

I agree with mapping since without a map, we don't know where to crop.

As for the rails, lets just see what else is released for the rail system revamp, it's too early to really make any decisions about it.

Netherrail will have to wait until 1.5 is out (to see the full changes of the update), and then once it is out I'll create a thread for it (pending Bla's approval).

Also I'll do some mapping today I guess.

Fyi mapping the nether is hard as there is netherrack at sky level, so you might have to change the settings.
Anyways, crytelline caves will be epic!

Crystalline caves, wait, where did you get that idea? You mean the quartz? It doesn't look all that awesome in-game, but can be fixed by a texture pack.

Bla went to bed like 2 minutes before I got this question.

As far as mapping the nether goes, we have 2 options, have netherrack, bedrock and flowing&still lava not shown. Or just render the 50-75 y coordinates which encompasses a decent percentage of what has actually been built in the nether. Which is preferred?

Without bedrock, netherrack and lava:

Layers 50-75 (maybe change them a bit?)

They are both centered on the blaze farm nether fortress.

I expect to put redstone and nether quartz on the list of default materials in collective storages.

And yes, the nether should be cropped.

As for the map, while the second one looks better, the first one is way more informative. I'd say use the first one because most of the infrastructure is hidden in the second. It took a moment for me to recognize where things were.

With cropping, maybe crop as close to the major structures and paths as possible, or as close as Bla or Yqt feels comfortable with.

Also, theres some portals and stuff that I don't see, such as other peoples portals and I don't know if you can see chests on there.

I think cropping everything that is outside of a square that is -625 to 625 from spawn should cover basically everything. 625 as a coordinate in the nether is 5000 in the overworld, and nothing is built outside of that radius in the overworld which would cover all of the portals.

before, kip mined  SUPER long tunnel in the nether, ask if other people have those kinds of projects so you don't destroy them
other than that, i think less is a better idea. more glowstone closer >:D

It's a snapshot, Bla's not going to update the server to a snapshot version.

Besides, I can guarantee you that Mojang wiill try to get rid of that bug since it's gamebreaking for everybody who plays MC, not just blacraft.

625 seems way too far away imo. Also I don't see any reason to crop a square except if it's because of laziness. Walking 625 meters in the nether is also much harder than in the overworld.

And how many times do I have to keep repeating that...

Bla, are you going to update the server or wait for bukkit update? As i accidentally updated and mcnoglostia or whatever only goes to beta. I tried other sites, but I could not find a jar for 1.4.5. With all the stronghold excitment, I would love to play.

Also, i cannot count my items because of this.
You do realize server updates are automatic from clanforge?
this server is not autp udpate
ClanForge manages the updates, not me.
Oh ok . Tiem to ****'m off
B-ong, they came out with a beta build this morning, so they're working on it. I myself am hoping they get the release build out before New Years (even though there will be 'fake' fireworks in the sky on New Years).

To reiterate what they said, they can't manually update it, clanforge does it automatically, so it's out of Bla's or Yqt's control to do it.

It's just because there won't be any portals or much else outside of that radius. I'm not sure if there is any other ideas on how to crop the nether.  A lot can easily be hidden in the nether so we should be cautious.

Note: Nether quartz ore blocks can only be mined with a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch.

http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Nether_Quartz_Ore
History Section

This will make it a lot harder to get, as it's a lot more risky with all the lava and stuff. Unless you have fire protection, then the nether is as easy as cake.

No duh, like every other ore block.

Yeah, having armor with fire protection would be a very good idea.  Also, you can still use an iron or diamond pickaxe. Its recommended that you have a fortune 3 pick though.

I never said it had to be on the same tool.

IMO, it would just be better to fortune pick the ore when you can do it safely. Then again, silk touching the ore allows you to pack more of it into inventory.

The same link you posted has "When mined with any pickaxe, it drops a Nether Quartz crystal" in it. It also says "Nether Quartz Ore drops experience when mined, and works with both Fortune and Silk Touch enchantments."

I think it's like coal and diamond ores, if you silk touch, you get the ore block (nether quartz ore), otherwise, you get an item drop like coal or diamond (nether quartz crystal).

Maybe also remove the gravel, which will help clean up the 'noise' on the map.

Anyways, some new stuff that was revealed yesterday by Dinnerbone or Jeb:

http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Block_of_Nether_Quartz Finally a marble-like block! Also, see those vertical striped ones? Marble columns. I hope we get marble block slabs as well.

Tnt dispensers, and mob spawners can be put into minecarts.

Dinnerbone made a cryptic reference to Lead Pigs:
 Nathan Adams ‏@Dinnerbone

I tried to run... I couldn't. They were too fast, too many. I could only face the leader and pray to the flying squids. http://i.imgur.com/ooouR.png

Whether that was a joke based on the whole 'pig invasion' they were doing to showcase the tnt and dispenser carts or not, we'll see.

There is such a thing called a lead pig and they are lead containers used for storing and/or transporting radioactive materials. I don't see Mojang adding uranium in this update, so.... maybe stronger boars that are part of a herd and get angry when you attack the herd or passively try to push you away if you get too close. We'll know in a few days what that's all about though.

Wait, that's not a very big list of features at all, especially considering how meaty the last few Snapshots have been!  Well, that can only mean one thing: since this Snapshot is mostly bug-fixes and minor tweaks, the launch of the 1.5 Redstone Update is nearly upon us!  Keep an ear to the ground, but in the meantime, give this Snapshot a test run!

woo-hoo! (even though i won't be in the server during the whole 1.5, prob.

With the pre-release coming this week and the main release coming next week most likely (and up to a week or more of waiting for Bukkit), have we totally decided on where and how to crop the nether?

Because if not, we should start up the discussion again.

1.5 will be released tomorrow it seems. (hasn't been delayed yet)

I'll be busy quite a bit tomorrow visiting family, so I'll set up a temporary 1.5 map when I get back here tomorrow night. Assuming I figure out how to. :P I dunno if Bla wants to do map cropping, if no I'll do it for both the nether and the overworld. I'll make maps of areas that I will crop so if you guys have any complaints tell me then. I'll also do new political and isometric maps.

Then once Bukkit 1.5 is out I'll probably shut off the server for a bit so I can update all the plugins and make some changes, this depends though. Bukkit took weeks to update for 1.4 and I only have a few days of free-time to actually do the plugin changes. :P

You're welcome to do the cropping kol, I'd like to see a drawing of how it would be cropped though. I should also upload the latest GIMP file I guess. Btw I noticed some borders were sort of transparent on the GIMP file you uploaded - you can make the brush have solid edges instead of smooth so that you either delete a pixel or not to avoid transparency.
