Overworld Ice Boat Roads
« on: 2020 12 31, 14:50:11 »
Are people interested in building ice boat roads in the overworld?
They could be used for travel and turned into boat racing segments occationally.

If so, how should they be standardized?
Elevated, e.g. y = 80, would take a lot of construction materials and more time to build but less time for mining, and might look nice if designed properly, but could also be eyesores
Near water level e.g. one block below water, would make cuts into the terrain in a lot of places but could be covered, and could allow easily transferring from the ice road to sea.
Tunnels e.g. y = 40, would take a lot of time digging out the tunnels but spare us from looking at them

Right now I'm thinking it could be interesting to have ice roads near the water level

Should it be at least four blocks wide?

transferring is not a big deal using simple soulsand elevators (see the original ice boat track at 2020 new years, northeast of Leikigo). In fact change of elevation isn't too big of a deal. Change of direction is more of a problem, I recommend making tracks as straight as possible.

I'm interested in this though. Sounds like fun.

The wider the better, I was imagining you could start with something like 4 blocks but expand it to ~10 if you have enough ice and time.

Part of the idea was to have them not just for transportation (Nether/elytra is already very fast) but also with the possibility to turn them into racing segments, and for decoration, so my idea was they would have some curvatures though less than regular cobble roads. But that could vary from place to place.

I think it should be slightly higher than water level, so boats and mobs can pass underneath it.

I haven't tested it but I imagine if you have the ice roads one level below sea, the water will just flow onto the ice an you can easily transfer between ice and sea, so you could easily make parts where boats can cross the roads and transfer.

The problem is there isn't much of an advantage when the boat is over water, which travels at normal speed.

These are some of the solutions I imagined, cyan is ice road and blue is ocean, white arrows are flowing water, so you could have like the upper one where there's just a small segment of ocean that flows down onto the ice road, allowing boats to cross and transfer, which would slow down the ice boat but not a lot as long as you don't have a lot of those segments.

Alternatively you could have something like the bottom where you need to move out of the actual ice road to get to a segment where the water flows down and transfer to the sea. Then sea boats would have to cross the ice segment but ice boats wouldn't have to slow down.

I also imagine that for this to look nice there would need to be some nice support infrastructure built around the ice roads in the ocean as well that separates them from the water. I'm a bit worried if the ice roads would become massive eyesores.

If people prefer elevated ice roads I think we should go for something quite a bit higher than 2 blocks above sea, maybe something like 10. I think that would look nicer, especially for long bridges, that it's not that close to the water, and it wouldn't have to cut as deeply into the land terrain. But I don't know how the boat elevators work or how they depend on the altitude change and that would also be important.

I'm building one at y=73, and I plan on using some type of connector road to connect it to horse roads or some other areas.

If we need a much shorter connection from an elevated ice road to lower levels, we can use soul sand.

I think we should take a break with constructing the ice roads and go back to discussing the design. I'm not very happy about how they look right now, though Idk how completed they are.

The Nether is good for efficient transport, so in The Nether we can have simple, direct routes with ice boats and fast turns. It's also a giant complex cave so the view isn't that ruined by the infrastructure near the top.

In The Overworld I think transport needs to be different and respect the terrain more, if it's built above ground. I think it would be a terrible eyesore to make straight ice boat skybridges all across the world. Those who are mostly interested in straight and narrow ice boat routes that are cheap to build and easy to follow, my suggestion is that we build them as underground tunnels.

My idea for elevated ice boat routes are that they would be a bit like the step from road to horse road, but one step further. They are wider, for example 8 blocks, so you can still turn a bit around on them without crashing. Maybe the sides have solid blocks next to the ice so you brake a bit instead of crashing directly (very annoying on any curved/diagonal ice roads). If there are terrain features like a hill, the ice roads might curve around the hill, or along a coastline, but could also tunnel through if that route is more efficient. In general they would be more direct than horse roads but still with some curves.

I think e.g. the sandstone blocks on the sides of the ice roads I've inspected match them well, but the ice roads would be more covered, also blocks next to and probably below the ice, and with periodic pylons so they don't look like they are weirdly floating.

For reference.
