To Blotz 2: There is still plenty of ocean, look around Mudkipz's farms, the area east of Azecliffs, a lot of ocean around smjjames' settlements and Fiah too, and Matolony. I don't think it's worth preserving.

To Fiah, ok the new map is here, another time it'd be nice if you didn't rotate the map and spent more than 20 seconds editing so it would be easier to understand. :l
To Mudkipz, I assume that means you want it preserved, that'll be a lot easier than moving it, so the new cropping plan includes it in preserving region below.



I inspected the stone circles to the north and this is how they look. I plan to crop them and if someone is missing them I'll just refund the materials. I also just mined the rails from UBSR resource post (and looted chests there etc.) to Kaministiquia's jungle border.

I have thought out another possibility. It is that before the cropping, we choose some criteria that the seed must have. They could be, at least one or two savanna M+ (or whatever it is) within 3km, etc. I could then generate a seed, check whether it fulfills the criteria, and pick the first one that does. That seems like a better idea to me than sitting and judging subjectively whether everyone get good enough terrain nearby. If people want that, they should write the criteria that they think I should judge the seed on, which would mostly be which biomes that should be there I guess.

My proposal would look something like:
- There must be at least 1 savanna M+ within 3 km of spawn
- There must be at least 1 savanna, flower forest, etc. etc. within 4 km of spawn
- Reject seed if a single pre-1.7 biome (or deep ocean) spawns that cover more than 1.5x1.5 km within 3 km of spawn
And maybe
- At least one new stronghold should generate in the new land

but that would mean I knew a lot of things about the landscape and stuff without exploring that myself ingame.

Remember that cropping can only be done chunkwise, so it will be impossible to follow a river like that. Anyway, here is my cropping proposal for the entire overworld. I tried to follow your plan around your regions.



Given that I think everyone is very excited about the new terrain, I have tried to be a bit stalinent?? (the opposite of leninent?) with the cropping, in other words, I have even cropped out some parts that I left there in previous cropping, such as northern Vatallus. I have marked some areas that I am unsure about in yellow, and feedback from people active in those areas would be useful.

1: Here I saw some circles on the map that were clearly player-made, I think in stone material. I guess stuffhappens might be the one responsible for them. I judged that they weren't important enough to preserve, so I plan to crop them, but I may be wrong, I could tp there I guess. If someone could inform/ask stuffhappens, that'd be useful, I don't really know any way I can contact him and he's rarely online.

2: This island had a ravine that I think Ventus, Mudkipz, possibly Darvince, Atomic and maybe Yqt explored long ago, and a camp in the ravine, but besides from that I don't think the island has anything special and that it has been abandoned for a long time, so I suggest that we just get rid of it now. If those who explored it want it to be preserved, say so.

3: Northern Vatallus. The decision of whether to preserve this area which includes a town is up to Mudkipz.

4: This area has the UBSR resource station I used as base for digging desert and stuff in October and the area includes the skyrail segments outside the red. Yqt wanted the skyrail demolished and my plan is to get on sometime soon and remove it so that we can just crop the area.

5: This desert, I built a road through it to the old Rossjungles and it had a village that I think is now dead... I liked the road a bit but it's not a big deal. It doesn't seem like anyone cares about the area anymore, anyway it's closest to Fiah so he should complain if he wants it to stay.

6: Quontex's settlement on the new quontinent he discovered long ago, this time I plan to just preserve the settlement and move it to near Quontia, since when he comes online I guess he'll be more excited about exploring post-1.7 terrain anyway. He probably won't have access to com to respond to this but if he really wants the entire island preserved I guess I could paste it back from a backup later.

7: Mystic Marsh I suggest be moved to the swamp near UYP and Mount Olympus, that Mudkipz built a road through. It seems like the most natural place to put it because of the biomes rather than having it spawn in the middle of whatever terrain will generate there after the crop.

8: Quontex's mushroom island I plan to move near Quontia, again because there probably will not even be an ocean around it after the crop.

So discuss. And I don't know how much time I'll have to crop it in the weekend, but I think I might have time. The math for next week is pretty easy and already mostly done, but on Saturday I have promised to help our local Unity List with putting up some election posters and spreading some election flyers around where I live, so Idk yet. The sooner people comment and agree, the earlier I can start working on the cropping.

Edit: Decided to shave some more land off Swamphold Swamp, down to the orange area instead. I think even more of it can be cropped actually, the ocean there is big, but I would have to be careful with the stronghold.

Ok so, after the 1.7 update, Blacraft will get a new seed, because I gave the old one away long ago and there's no reason to continue to use the old one when we'll get chunky borders in any case outside the cropped land.

Some people have asked me to browse through seeds and pick a good one. Others have said I should pick a random one. Personally I don't really like that any of us (including myself) should "pick" the terrain we want and know where different biomes are going to be before exploring, and I think the probability that we'll be surrounded by ice plains or oceans eveywhere is extremely unlikely. Darvince has said it's likely that there won't be one of those magic mesa biomes within 8km and Fiah wants the third stronghold (which I could also just generate separately and paste somewhere into the world using WorldEdit and then announce an approx location or something).

Anyway, discuss and vote here. You can change votes after voting.

And remember if I do have to pick the seed: It is very unlikely that I will find a seed that will fit all of your requests if all of you say you want specific biomes to border you etc. If I pick the seed, I don't want to hear complaints afterwards.

So do people want to celebrate New Year same place as the last time again (in Spawntown), or do they want to do it somewhere else?

Discuss. If we can't agree, we could make a poll I guess.

I personally think it should at least be in an urban environment. We already have some infrastructure in Spawntown for the event now, so we can easily celebrate it here for another year if people prefer the tradition of celebrating it in the same place. And the 2013 banner could easily be modified a bit to accomodate for another year. :b

Edit: This year New Year will be celebrated in Oasis City, Kaeshar, at the midnight in UTC time between December 30 and December 31.

So since nobody posted anything... Checked the logs and found Thomas, Yqt, Darvince and smj have played in the snapshot together, for some hours there were three to four on. The logs show that the server didn't crash or restart like Blacraft did. So it seems unlikely that it's all Multiplay's fault.

I've backed up the snapshot world and I'll try making a new profile for Blacraft just to see how many unnecessary files that I can get rid of.

Edit: I have deleted everything on the server, then restored the Blacraft world, End and Nether, then installed the latest version of Essentials without changing the configurations, then installed the latest version of LWC without changing the configurations, then restored Blacraft's LWC files so the old LWC protections are still there, then I've copied the logging plugin from yesterday so that it works.

There seems to be one error so far which is related to LWC, which happens every time the server starts:

2013-10-15 13:04:12 [SEVERE] java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /.rw/games/minecraft/beta/80818/plugins/LWC/lib/native/Linux/amd64/libsqlitejdbc.so: Shared object "libc.so.6" not found, required by "libsqlitejdbc.so"It is related to the files that store all our locked chests etc. As far as I can tell the error doesn't affect my gameplay, but if it affects the gameplay when more are on we may have to reset the LWC database sometime, which means everyone would have to make their protections again.

There were notable differencies between the configuration file that Essentials created now and the old one it was using, so we can hope that is the thing that caused the problems.

The plan is to let the server run with just these plugins on and see what happens, if it runs fine with 5 players on for maybe an hour we could begin to add the other plugins one by one.

Except WorldEdit and MFS which I guess were never actually used.

I figured out that it is OnTime which relies on Vault. OnTime won't work without it.

Edit: Also put back ProperTime now.

Two restarts without AutoSaveWorld, so I put it back. Now removed ProperTime.

One restart at 21:09.

I also stopped mining/digging sand and sandstone with very efficient tools, which probably contributed a lot to the server load, and now we're around 3-4 online, so this could explain that it doesn't seem to restart very often anymore.

21:26: Ok 2 restarts and a crash, enough waiting. Vault is back and MFS is removed.
21:31: First restart

21:37: It restarted again, so MFS has been restored, and I have now removed DeathChest.
21:48: First restart
21:53: Second restart, putting DeathChest back.

The plan is to first look for an update for LWC, then if that doesn't work, update Essentials, then disable LWC and at last disable Essentials.

Edit: LWC is now updated.
22:28: First restart.
22:43: Second restart.

Essentials is now updated. The new file is around 800 kb, while the old one was around 700 kb I think, so clearly it was outdated. Hopefully this will fix everything.
22:46: Restart, crash, etc. many times, problem not fixed.

23:56: Removed WorldEdit and MFS.

SafeCreeper is now off. Be careful.

Edit: 2 restarts and a crash since turning it off, so it's probably not SafeCreeper. Turned it back on.

Now removing BorderGuard. 2 crashes have happened, so it probably is not BorderGuard.

Edit: Yqt says he tested WorldEdit and that disabling it didn't help with the crashes. The crashes happened at least 2 times.

Now removing AutoSaveWorld.

Updates:

For the past few hours, we had disabled the logging plugin, but the server had still crashed twice and restarted at least 5 times while I, Blotz, smj, Thomas and Yqt were on. So it seems that the logging plugin is not the cause of the problems.

We have now updated OnTime to see if this could help. - It appears that this did not fix the problems.

Just putting this out there that this is essentially a waste of resources. Tuto said he would be ok with just modifying the rail that runs Aahrus-Desertopia so that he has a station on it. This rail ends 5 blocks from Rail Route 5 and transferring is absolutely no problem. The route he would take is nearly the exact same as previous infrastructure, with only the addition of a station in Timbalta and another one in Mauritius.
I see - I have no idea where your GLRs run, only where the tunnels run, so that would've been useful to know when we walked around in the area and planned the rails a few days ago. Anyway looking at that I can easily agree that it is a waste of resources.

Anyway, an alternative could be this. We could let it go through the ocean instead of through Capital and still have a station in western Mauritius, or it could follow Azecliff's coast and go below the island there. That [cyan] would shorten the route 420 meters.



We could also consider replacing the GLR with an actual tunnel, from Desertopia through Timbalta to Capital, because the route itself fits very well into the web plan.

As far as the claim that we will need it to expand to any future members in that area is also false. Because of Welptopia and Vatallus, there is no one but kipz for a good thousand blocks north or east of him. Rail Route 5 is much much closer to unclaimed territory.
I think letting the line go through for example Welptopia and Vatallus in the future could be a good idea, there are also interesting places worth connecting.

Not saying we shouldn't do this, but there is a much cheaper alternative that is basically the same. This is though, the most expensive rail related poll in the Blacraft Voting Centre so we need some criticism.

In the end I think the best would be if we expanded the tunnels to connect all of Blacraft according to the web plan. Local elevated rails or GLR are ok, but I think the rail system would be best if it were kept as simple and consistent as possible and not make too many different systems. The Nether is by far the cheapest alternative, so if we just wanted fast and cheap transport we could just set up a portal in Timbalta and make a road or rail from there to Capital and Spawntown.

I guess I'll cancel the poll on the current plan later today then. I'd wish this had been posted before I had made the poll.

Could CHDistantFarm be the cause of the restarts?
- Yqt has disabled the plugin, and while it was disabled, we still experienced restarts, meaning that it is unlikely to be the cause of the problem.

Could RollingMinecarts be the cause of the restarts?
- This plugin was installed after the problems began, so this is probably not the cause of the problems.

Could the automatic restarts every 4 hour be causing all the restarts?
- Bla has decreased the automatic restarts to once every 24 hours around October 13-14 midnight UTC. We need more evidence to know whether this could affect all the restarts.

Could the restarts be caused by the server running out of SSD memory?
- Bla has removed 307 MB of logs around October 13-14 midnight UTC. We need more evidence to know whether this could affect all the restarts.

Could the logging plugin be the reason for the restarts?
- Bla has changed the settings of the logging plugin. It has been set to track fewer non-player actions such as natural mob spawning (the entity logs make up 75% of a typical log set, of which natural mob spawning makes up a large part). We need more evidence to know whether this could affect the restarts or performance for sure, but there should be good reason to think that it will reduce lag.

20131014 13:48 UTC: Two restarts have happened over the past 10 minutes while playing with **** and smj. Bla has been digging thousands of sand blocks with eff 4 shovel which might contribute to server problems. So it seems unlikely that the above things have affected the restarts.

As you may already be aware, we're currently in the process of making some important upgrades to our network. These upgrades increase our ability to handle large amounts of traffic and will greatly increase the stability and resiliency of the servers using this network.

 
An important part of our upgrades will be to replace some of our core networking equipment. We will be doing this in our Amsterdam data centre early next week. We do try where possible to limit any time where your server is unavailable but unfortunately it isn't possible to do so when replacing this hardware.
 
We will be doing this on Wednesday 9th October between the following times:

18:00 CEST
 
We expect the downtime to last for approximately 2-3 hours between the above window and we will do our very best to keep this to a minimum. There may also be some very short periods where your server is not available within this window.

I think we would, they probably let you use FTP which is the thing I've been using for plugins recently, but Multiplay also lets you enable some plugins through their interface and some of them I don't really know how function or how to set up because of this. I guess it would all work if we copied the entire world folder by FTP with all the plugins, then everything should be the same.

For comparison, Multiplay with 12 players and 1024 MB RAM costs 13.55/month (121 DKK).

If we take only those stats into account, Perfection servers is better than Multiplay. However, I also want to compare their network speeds, CPUs etc. before switching, and I also need to consider how they are to manage compared to Multiplay. And going on one perfection server with many more slots than Blacraft, possibly a server located in a different place, and completely different plugins, I don't think that is a convincing way to compare them. If I'm unsure, we could try a test month on Perfection where both servers are up I guess. I would of course choose the option for 12 players if we would move server.

The Minecraft session servers are currently down, which is causing all servers to currently be unreachable. There is nothing we can do about this issue other than wait for Mojang to bring their servers back online. We apologize for any inconvenience this is causing.

Update: The session servers are up and running and appear to be stable.
Update: Mojang's servers appear to be in Purgatorial state between Offline and Online, users may or may not be able to login/update and connect to servers.

Anyway I restarted the server and I think it's up now, but it seems to be running on 1.6.4 and I have 1.6.2 so can't test.

Amplified - too resource demanding on the server, people already seem to complain a lot about lag, this would only make it worse.

Should Blacraft use the large biome generation or stick to the current/default biome sizes when 1.7 is released?

1.7 will mess up the terrain borders in any case, so it would be the best time to change it if we wanted to.

I have considered it earlier and I like the fact that it seems more realistic to have larger biomes imo. However, I also like to limit our travel, because the server only has 2GB of space for world, plugins and stuff, and so the backups don't get too big and mapping doesn't take too long. And it makes it harder to assign regions to people where they have options to develop a varied terrain.
Considering all the new biome improvements and variations, I think I will most likely vote for preserving the current generation. If there were no space problems, I'd probably vote against.

I had an idea of a forum game which was that we write law proposals and vote for them to compose our own, fictive community law/ideology.

I don't know exactly how that would work but I guess we could propose some laws on that.

I guess it would work if we number all proposals and people then type the numbers they vote for or against. To make it looks more pro I think we should wrap all the proposals in cool quotation marks as well. If you suggest something, it's assumed you vote for it unless otherwise specified.

Maybe we should put it in a Google document.

On Saturday, I'd prefer to end them before 21:00 UTC.
If you want them on Sunday, they'll have to end before 19:30 UTC.
They don't have to happen on the same day.
