more bg ideas

two way battles:
just like normal battles, except both zones are simultaneously attacking and defending. this probably requires at least 4v4. if when either zone is seized, the battle in that zone ceases, but the battle continues in the other zone until time is up or that zone's flag is seized.

progressive battles:
instead of a flag, each province has a 'pillar' which is obsidian stacked over a chest stacked over an obsidian stacked over a chest ... about 3 to 5 times. an enchanted stick with a special code is placed in the chests. during each battle, attackers may break obsidian and take the stick, but defenders may not rebuild the obsidian and chests. at the end of each battle, defenders may repair one level of chest/obsidian up to the maximum value. if attackers wear down the defense until they seize all the sticks, they conquer the zone.

using this method, it probably takes multiple battles to take a zone. perhaps to compensate for how slow it is, progressive battles can operate over several zones instead of a single one.

Interesting ideas.

The first one I think should just end when either of the zones is taken over. When you've taken over the enemy zone they're attacking from, I don't think they should continue to attack the other zone from it. Also, on the map, if the two zones swap owners, it's likely they'd become detached from their fronts, and that'd trigger the mechanism saying you lose the zones detached from your front. I think it'd become a bit messy.
However, it's an interesting idea to let two zones try to take each other's flags instead of playing just the roles of attacker and defender. As it is now the attackers don't have much to lose, only the defenders, so that seems more fair. Maybe we should try and see how that works, timed like regular battles.

Progressive battles:
I don't think I'm completely sure about this, but I think that'd be better to have in another war region, having both flags and that would make stuff more complicated and I think the flag concept seems more intuitive and probably more fun.

I was thinking maybe they should be like... the last 20% or so of a battle's scheduled time, the defenders may attack the attacker's base if the attackers have not completed their own objective.

Why? :P Sounds unneccesarily complicated, and then we need to announce that moment, I'll need to keep a lot of attention to the clock. Would be simpler to just say during the entire battle.

there should be no unlegit reward for completely finishing off the battleground, it should just be "refreshed" if anyone manages to claim the entire thing. like, bases removed, damage repaired, and all zones are without an owner.

then why would anyone bother finishing off the battleground just to lose the land and everything they've built up?

i came up with this one:

only fists and snowballs allowed, and armor is unrestricted. weapons like lava or tnt are restricted.

BUT.

there is no respawn on death. when you die, you are out of the battle.

this ruleset can be applied to most battle "types". we could use it with a (it would have to be looong) timer, or just have people fight until all the people on one side are dead

There aren't any unlegit rewards currently either. But I agree with Kip, there's no point in punishing anyone who manages to take over the entire BG by simply removing all their progress. The rules still describe how other teams can form and conquer zones.

As for the fist-snowball idea, it doesn't sound that interesting to me, not in the BG, maybe for another pvp region. I don't see a point in making completely new combat rules from scratch, the current ones are plenty of fun even though they can probably be improved.

I think when death means no more participation in the battle, you have a tendency to avoid combat, which makes the battles less intense and exciting.

I was just thinking this thing where the kills/deaths decides the winner, for another battleground obv. And maybe no terrain damage so people can't pillar 20 blocks up and stay there.

New teams can form by conquering a zone from the Start zone, or by receiving zones as gifts from other teams.

get a countdown plugin or something... or just use kip's idea of equal opportunity fighting

We need some sort of BG terrain restoration after the battles are done. It is at the point where the zones are unusable for battles after the first fight  :P

i love it yqt. imagine if you walked into afghanistan and it looked like central park. no! it should be utterly destroyed! i would love it if one day you could walk into the battleground and see bases built on top of older destroyed bases and so on, with lava and craters everywhere. wonderful!

I also like the fact that the terrain gets worn down over time, but I hope it won't be simply shrinking down towards bedrock and end up in a fashion like the Nether terrain with ghasts around.
And all those water and lava defenses... I suspect they contribute quite a bit of lag to the battles.

lava is the only true fluid  ;)
